GREEN BAY – When the on-field work at the Green Bay Packers’ three-day post-draft rookie orientation camp wrapped up Sunday afternoon, it meant the easy part was over for the team’s 29 tryout players and the hardest part – waiting for a call that might never come – began.
While the team’s eight draft picks and 14 undrafted free-agent signees all figure to be with the team when organized team activity practices kick off May 21, the tryout guys can only hope that they made enough of an impression to land a roster spot.
As of Sunday afternoon, the Packers had 86 players on their roster, meaning they could sign four players to those open roster spots. They could add more if they cut another player, or they could add fewer if they want to hold a roster spot or two open for possible signings down the road.
While coach Mike McCarthy was answering questions in his post-camp press conference, the tryout players were in a meeting with the team’s personnel staff following the third and final practice of the camp. McCarthy said he and general manager Ted Thompson talked Sunday morning and “met extensively on the prospects that we feel have the best opportunity to be on our 90(-man roster). So that’s really what we’re working through right now.”
Asked when those tryout players might be signed, McCarthy replied, “I would say in the next day or so.”
Overall, McCarthy was pleased with the three-day camp, saying he saw significant improvement during the three practices and that the players practice habits improved each day.
“I’m excited that we’ve had this camp. There’s a lot of good football out there today,” McCarthy said. “Today was out best practice. The tempo was the best that we’ve had of the three. I really felt that the practice environment of the team as a whole got better throughout the weekend; that’s very encouraging. That’s a credit to the players and a credit to our coaches. We actually finished a little ahead of schedule coming off the practice field today. I don’t think that’s ever happened – I’ll have to go back and check the notes – at a rookie orientation camp. They were flying around today.”
