GREEN BAY -- Three Green Bay Packers were chosen for the NFC Pro Bowl roster Wednesday: Aaron Rodgers, who’ll start at quarterback for the NFC; Clay Matthews, who was named as a backup outside linebacker; and veteran Jeff Saturday, who was named as a backup center.

Saturday’s selection set social media ablaze after the 6 p.m. announcement, since he was benched last week in favor of backup Evan Dietrich-Smith.

Kick returner Randall Cobb and right guard Josh Sitton were named first alternates, while fullback John Kuhn, defensive tackle B.J. Raji, cornerback Tramon Williams and safety Charles Woodson were other alternates.

Rodgers, the reigning NFL MVP, received the third Pro Bowl selection of his career (2009, 2011). After not making the team in 2010, when he would have missed the game anyway with the Packers in the Super Bowl, Rodgers has now been named the NFC starter for the second straight year. He also started the game after the 2009 season, although he was initially on the roster as the third QB selected.

Rodgers enters Sunday’s regular-season finale leading the league in passer rating (106.2) and touchdown/interception ratio (4.38, 35/8), and ranks No. 2 in touchdown passes (35) and No. 4 in completion percentage (67.0).

Matthews becomes the first player in Packers history to be picked for the Pro Bowl in each of his first four seasons in the league. Matthews leads the team with 12 sacks (No. 6 in the NFL), despite missing four games due to injury, along with 50 tackles (40 solo), a forced fumble and four passes defensed.

Saturday received his sixth career Pro Bowl selection after being chosen five times with the Indianapolis Colts (2005, ’06, ‘07, ’09, ‘10). He led NFC centers in the fan balloting, which makes up 1/3 of the voting.

The 2013 Pro Bowl will be played on Jan. 27 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, on the Sunday before Super Bowl XLVII.
