Nelson will be 'hard-pressed' to play Sunday night

Jordy Nelson's bad hamstring is expected to sideline him against Detroit.

GREEN BAY – Greg Jennings made it through his first action in over two months just fine. The same could not be said for his fellow Green Bay Packers star wide receiver, Jordy Nelson, who is unlikely to play in next Sunday night’s game against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.

Jennings played a whopping 53 of the Packers’ 81 offensive snaps in Sunday’s 23-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, primarily because Nelson left following the team’s second offensive series after aggravating the hamstring injury that sidelined him for the Packers’ Oct. 28 victory over Jacksonville.

And Jennings can expect a heavy workload again against the Lions. While McCarthy said he didn’t think Nelson’s injury is “serious in nature,” the does not envision him playing Sunday night.

“I don’t know how many weeks Jordy would be out,” McCarthy said Monday. “I think he would be pressed hard to play this week.”

McCarthy reiterated what he’d said after the game, that Nelson actually had discomfort in his hamstring – McCarthy confirmed Monday that it is the same hamstring that flared up in an Oct. 24 practice – during warm-ups but wanted to play.

“Jordy actually felt something in pregame, so he went back into the training room and then tried to play through it. It’s part of where we are in our season,” McCarthy said. “Our roster has been stressed. The receivers, some of their numbers are up as far as the reps they’re playing. Jordy is a very durable player. But I’m not concerned about it. It’s kind of the way our season has gone so far.”

With veteran Donald Driver inactive with a nagging thumb injury, Jennings was forced to play more than the coaches planned on him playing. Playing 65 percent of the snaps, Jennings caught four passes for 46 yards, including a critical 8-yard grab that kept the Packers’ 11-minute game-clinching drive alive in the fourth quarter.

“He played probably about twice as much as we wanted him to, but that was obviously because Jordy got out of the game early,” offensive coordinator Tom Clements said. “But he played well. He caught the ball, which is one of the things after a long layoff (you worry about). On a day where it wasn’t that cold but it conditions weren’t ideal and he hadn’t played in a while and hadn’t been hit in a while, we were happy with the way he played. And, he came out of it without any physical problems, and that’s a good sign.”
