Hoops: Badgers debut at No. 21 in coaches poll

MADISON – Bo Ryan’s 2012-13 Wisconsin basketball squad is one of five Big Ten teams ranked in the preseason top 25 coaches poll, released Wednesday morning.

The Badgers, 26-10 a season ago, checked in at No. 21. The Badgers have four returning starters (Jared Berggren, Mike Bruesewitz, Josh Gasser and Ryan Evans) from its 2011-12 team that finished one point shy of beating No. 1 seed Syracuse in the ‘Sweet 16.’

Bruesewitz, a senior, is currently sidelined while recovering from a leg laceration suffered during a team workout a week ago.

Indiana, a ‘Sweet 16’ team from a season ago, received 21 of a possible 31 first-place votes and checked in at No. 1 in the coaches poll. The Hoosiers also return four starters from last year’s team, including projected lottery pick Cody Zeller.

Ohio State checked in at No. 4 and Michigan, featuring All-Big Ten guard Trey Burke, ranked No. 5. Michigan State appeared in the preseason poll at No. 14.

UW will play eight games against teams currently ranked in the top 15 throughout the course of the season, including tilts with No. 1 Indiana, No. 4 Ohio State (twice), No. 5 Michigan, No. 10 Florida, No. 14 Michigan State (twice) and No. 15 Creighton.

The Badgers open play Nov. 11 against Southeast Louisiana.
