Abbrederis holds down No. 1 punt return duties

MADISON – Though there’s been plenty of speculation regarding the topic throughout the course of fall camp, it turns out Jared Abbrederis is going to turn up right where most Badger fans and maybe even the coaches anticipated.
“Yeah, I’ll be the number one punt returner at game time,” Abbrederis said.
Wisconsin head coach Bret Bielema said early in camp that he had entertained the idea of limiting the reps Abbrederis would have on special teams simply to lighten the load for the team’s No. 1 wide receiver.
So he tried James White, Kenzel Doe, Darius Hillary and a handful of other potential returners with hopes of finding one that could contribute at a level similar to Abbrederis. Apparently that didn’t happen, though it is conceivable to think other players will get a shot to return kicks if any non-conference or conference game get out of hand.
“I love returning punts,” Abbrederis said. “So definitely being able to do that is a blessing. It wasn’t really that I demanded it, but coach gave me the opportunity to do that and I’m excited about it. There are a couple other great returners.
“I’ve still got to earn the position, but I’m glad I’m back there.”
Doe is listed as the No. 2 punt returner and White is listed as the No. 2 kick returner, both behind Abbrederis, on the depth chart.
