MADISON - With less than two weeks until Big Ten Media Days, and a little more than three weeks until the University of Wisconsin football team takes to the practice field for this first time this fall, the school’s website has released an updated 2013 roster.
As expected, redshirt junior Jeff Lewis has been moved to defensive back. The shift from running back has been rumored throughout the summer and makes sense with the depth at that position. Though Lewis – like all secondary players – is listed as a defensive back he’s likely going to get a look at safety where the only known commodity is senior Dezman Southward.
note: In the orginal roster posted on Sunday at UWBadgers.com, offensive lineman Jake Meador was listed. He has since been removed. Meador would have been a redshirt freshman this season. He was recruited to Wisconsin by former offensive line coach Mike Markuson, who was fired last September.
As reported earlier this summer, quarterback Danny O’Brien is no longer with the team. The transfer started the first three games in 2010 before losing his starting job to Joel Stave.
Also no longer listed is Reggie Mitchell. The safety, who exited spring practice as a starter opposite Southward, reportedly was planning to transfer to Pittsburgh and play for former Wisconsin offensive coordinator Paul Chryst.
The Badgers have seven quarterbacks on the roster – including a pair of freshmen walk-ons in Connor Senger and Joe Ferguson.
When the 2013 recruiting class was announced in February there were 19 freshmen listed – 15 scholarship players and four walk-ons. Since then, nine more have been added making for a total of 27 freshmen on the fall roster.
There was only one player announced as part of the 2013 recruiting class that didn’t get admitted. Safety Donnell Vercher – who would have filled a big need in the secondary – will instead play at Fresno State.
Cornerback Sojourn Shelton was No. 22 in the spring. He is now sporting No. 2, the same number as former Badgers and All-Big Ten corners Jamar Fletcher ('97-'00) and Scott Starks ('01-'04).
Corner Devin Gaulden – who is looking to bounce back from some injury issues in his first two seasons – has gone from No. 32 to No. 10 – the number worn on defense previously by Devin Smith.
Sherard Cadogan, who was moved to linebacker in the spring, is now wearing No. 17 instead of No. 86.
